Reading: Please make sure you get an independent reading book if you did not like the one you chose in class today. You must have your new book by Wednesday. You will begin reading it tomorrow and doing work in your reading log. You also have vocabulary homework due on Wednesday. You have to define the first five vocabulary words of The Ciy Of Ember. We will probably begin working with that book tomorrow as well. For those of you who purchased books, they should be in early this week hopefully.

Social Studies: We are beginning Chapter 2 Section 3 this week. Quiz retakes for Chapter 2 Section 2 will be on Friday. Next week we will begin a review game next week. When we return to school, we will play the review game again and then take the Chapter 2 test. Please make sure you get a little bit of studying in on your holiday break.

Writing: We are learning about and utilizing prepositions. We will have a new spelling list today. I will update my blog with the new words later today.

Math: DIVIDING DECIMALS.... YAY! We started going over the process and the rules for dividing decimals. We did a few practice problems together and everyone seemed to get it so far!

There is one more day to bring in Adpot-A-Grandparent money. Please support the elderly and sick during this holiday season of giving!

Adopt A Grandparent

The Student Council has been participating in the Adopt A Grandparent to help elderly in nursing homes. We have been asking our fellow middle school classmates to contribute at least $1.00 to help out. We are going to be working with another organization to construct baskets of necessities to give out this holiday season. All money has to be turned in by Monday, December 15, 2008. So if you would like to contribute just bring your money to Mrs. Lewis or any student council member. We appreciate all of your help during this time of the year.

We have also been working with different lower school classes to construct holiday cards for Adopt a Grandparent as well. The cards have been turning out great! Thanks to all of the lower school teachers who allowed us to come into your classrooms!

Monday, December 8, 2008

Spelling Words

This is week 3 of our spelling words. The students do not move on to a new spelling list until they have mastered the previous one. Each student knows what list they are on.

There is a Reading final test on Wednesday for all classes. Please make sure you are studying everything we have learned so far this year, even vocabulary. You were given a list of everything that we have covered during this unit. We started making a study guide during class. You have 4 stories to look at: "Baseball Saved Us," "The Day the Sun Came Out," "Dragon's Pearl," and "The Cage."

In Social Studies we are ending Chapter 2 Section 2 with a quiz sometime next week. We will move on quickly to Chapter 2 Section 3.

In Math class we are working with decimals. Yesterday we started dividig decimals.

In Writing class we are starting our Preposition unit. We will be having a spelling test today.

Reminder that there is an agenda check EVERY FRIDAY. If you are missing 3 signatures (parent) then you will receive a referral with a consequence. If you are missing 10 signatures anytime during the trimester then you will receive a referral with a detention. We started a new trimester last week so this gives everyone a fresh start. Its December!!!

We have just started the month of December and a brand new trimester!!

Reports cards for the 1st trimester will be coming home on Thursday, December 4, 2008.

The holiday shop is open this week for students to do their shopping for their family members and/or friends. Please do not forget your money on the day that your class is scheduled to go. All 7th grade classes will be going on Wednesday, December 3, 2008 during their reading time. It will end on Friday, December 5, 2008. Anyone wishing to volunteer please contact PTO member Melissa Yoder.

Tomorrow is a Chapter 2 Section 1 quiz in Social Studies. Please make sure you are studying for it!!!

In Reading we just took a quiz on "The Cage." We will be moving on to a new story soon.

In Math, we are beginning to work with decimals. Right now we are working on adding and subtracting decimals. The important tip for this is that you line up the decimals. Use zeroes to fill in any empty spaces. After the decimals are lined up, you add or subtract like normal. As for the answer, you just drop your straight down.

Our new electives are starting today! If you do not remember what you have-please see me or any other teacher.

Have a great week!!

Forms were sent home with each student as well as a money envelope. This is a great time to let the kids to their own shopping and surprise their parents. Its always exciting to see what the kids will pick out!
One year, my son bought my husband candy and a car. He later told me that he knew Daddy would let him play with it.

I hope everyone has a great Thanksgiving! Don't eat too much and remember to be thankful for all that you have!

Saturday, October 4, 2008

Writing, Reading, Social Studies, and Math updates!

In Writing, the plot outline, conflict, setting, and character list is due Thursday, October 9, 2008.

Plot outline, conflict, setting, and character list – Every good story revolves around a conflict. Your story is only as good as the conflict you’ve created. First, decide what the conflict will be and classify it (what vs. what?). Then, describe the various settings in the story, listing them by category. Next, create a plot outline, detailing the list of events as it advances the conflict. For each part of the plot outline, write at least one sentence to explain the event(s). Finally, write a list of your characters, organizing them into “major” and “minor” characters. For your major characters, write a two-paragraph description of each, including physical traits, personality traits, family/friends, failures, and accomplishments. All of the above is due in class on Oct. 10. You may meet with your group again, allowing your group to ask questions and help you to add details.

Friday, October 10, 2008 is a teacher inservice day.. the students do not have school! Exciting huh?!?! Think of me when you are sleeping in :-)

October 27-31 the bookfair will be at Providence Creek Academy!! Books are so fun!

Tuesday there is a Reading Quiz for "The Day the Sun Came Out." There is also a writing quiz on Tuesday for complete subject, complete predicate, simple subject, simple predicate, verbs, and verb phrases!

Important things to remember for the reading quiz:
- vocabulary
-about making inferences
- questions that we did about the story
- the characters and setting

Important things to remember for the writing quiz:
- simple subject is the noun-person, place, thing or idea
- simple predicate is the verb
- know your helping verbs (I hope everyone copied the chart out of the book)
-when looking for the verb (ask yourself what is being done by the subject or the state of being)
- when looking for the verb phrases- look for a helping verb (it may not be right next to the word)
- only include the helping verb/s and the main verb when identifying the verb phrase-NO OTHER WORDS! Think about the activities we did on this last week!

For the first Social Studies class, you guys will have your quiz on Monday!

Ms. Decker's math class- quiz Tuesday on multiplying and dividing fractions!
- When you multiply fractions you multiply straight across and then simply!
- When you divide fractions you flip the second fraction (reciprocal) and then multiply straight across.

Make sure you simplify ALL of your answers EVERYTIME you do a fraction problem!

Writing Assignment

Tomorrow is Jeans Day!! The cost is 3.00 for students! If you wear jeans, wear a school appropriate shirt.

On to the writing piece for the 1st trimester:

You will write a creative, fictional story. Your genre must be realistic fiction; therefore, your story must be set in present day and your events should be believable. Other than that, the story is up to you. You will, however, be assigned to a writing "group", other students who will help you think of ideas, in addition to revising and editing your work. You, in return, will help your group members in the same way. You will be required to complete certain tasks by a particular deadline in order to receive points toward your project grade.

I am going to be posting one part at a time.

Brainstorm/Prewrite is due Friday, October 3, 2008.
You must write on a piece of paper five ideas for a short story and bring it to class on October 3. You may use your writing journal as inspiration, but you are not required to do so. Your ideas must be numbered and at least 4 sentences in length. On Oct 3, you will meet with your group to discuss your ideas and to brainstorm new ideas. At the end of the class period, you will have narrowed your ideas to the one you will write. You will turn in all your written ideas, circling the idea which you intend to write.

Have a wonderful evening!

Writing Process

In writing, we are going to beginning a large writing piece soon. Today we reviewed and took notes on the writing process.
Prewriting=thinking
Drafting=writing
Revising=fixing ideas and details
Editing=fixing mechanics
Publish=final copy and turning it in
You need to make sure you have all components of the writing process completed before you turn in any writing assignment.

Helpful tips: Read your writing piece backwords. Start at the end and work up. This will help you pick up on misspelled words and other errors. You should also not write the same way that you talk. We do not speak with correct grammar, but you need to have correct grammar in your writing.

Tuesday, September 23, 2008

This Week

The Open House is Wednesday, September 24, 2008 from 5:30pm until 7:00pm. It is a great time to come and meet all of your child's teachers for the 2008-2009 school year. You will also get a chance to see some of the work that your child has done so far this year. The PTO meeting is immediately following at 7:00pm. I encourage all parents to attend and be involved in our PTO!

The school store will be open and available during the open house as well.

Tomorrow the 7th grade has a test in Science on living and nonliving organisms. Be sure to study and start your science grade out great!

Friday, September 26, 2008 is a jeans day. The cost is $3.00 for students. They may wear jeans and a school appropriate shirt.

We are working on subject and predicate in Writing. Study your verbs!

For Reading, students have to complete vocab for The Day The Sun Came Out and we will begin reading that story soon.

In Social Studies, we are still on Chapter One. We have been watching a video on Islam and will read Section 2 this week and have a quiz either the end of this week or the beginning of next week.

In Math, we are adding and subtracting fractions. Be sure to work with your multiplication facts daily so it is easier to memorize them! We will be learning to convert improper fractions to mixed numbers next. One important thing to remember when adding and subtracting numbers is that you need a common denominator. Tonights homework was to finish page 30 1-16. We have been working on this page for 2 class periods now.

Please feel free to email me with any questions or concerns!

Have a wonderful week!

Book Donations

The Student Council sent home a flyer about book donations last week. We are looking for donations of books with the reading levels of kindergarten through eighth grade. The school store will sell these books from $.50 to $1.00 to students at PCA. This allows all students to have the availablity to build their home library. With the economic situation around society today, it is difficult for some families to allow students to visit bookstores and purchase books. The average book is $4.00-$5.00. This is going to give students the opportunities to have those books at home. Having books at home will help students in their reading abilities as well as the desire to read.

For every 10 books that you bring in, you will receive one free item ($1.00) from the school store. How cool is that?

Please bring all of your donations to the main office where there is a box for book donations! Thank you so much for all of your help in helping the students of PCA!

Sunday, September 14, 2008

Writing Quiz

Don't forget that there is a Writing quiz on Monday. It will be on the Parts of Speech that we learned in class. We made a chart, created a song, and played a Bingo game on the parts of speech. Be sure to study and make sure you know each one. You will need to know the name, definition, and a few examples!

The parts of speech are Noun, Verb, Adjective, Adverb, Preposition, Interjection, Conjunction, Article, and Pronouns. Study your chart.

Also, make sure your Social Studies project got turned in. It was due on Friday. You loose citizenship points each day that it is late. After 3 days, the citizenship grade will be a 0. It is important to start the year off great and get things turned in when they are due!

I hope everyone has a great week!!

All of the school supplies are $1.00 and under. We also have Providence Creek Academy water bottles and magnets for sale. Come check us out!

We will be at the Open House on September 24, 2008..

The school store is also accepting donations of school related items that can benefit the students. Please let me know if you have anything to donate. One thing I would like to be able to offer the students is books for $1.00 and under. If you have any old childrens books that we could offer, please let me know. ITS SEPTEMBER!

We are into September and in full swing here at Providence Creek Academy! If you have not already purchased your school supplies, you need to do that by Monday. We spent the first week of school working on beginning of the year activities including the rules, procedures, discipline, intervention, etc. The students were had a say about the rules and the consequences. It was an enjoyable experience for the students. The rules are universal around the middle school:
Respect Yourself, Respect the Teacher, Respect Others, and the Learning Environment.
The students created a list of consequences. Once they have earned the consequence level, they will choose which consequence they would like to fulfill.

Fall sports are underway as well! Congrats to all of our fall 2009 athletes! You can check out the sports schedules on www.providencecreekacademy.org and come out to cheer on your Saints!

Student Council will begin today during Elective time. Bring all of your great ideas and thoughts to help better your school and the education of your peers! We will also be getting the school store up and running very soon. There will not be any food sold this year. The school store will sell school supplies and hopefully some Providence Creek Academy items. The days and times will be announced soon!

If you have not had a chance to explore our new grading policy, please look into that. It has drastically changed to help your children become better students and be more successful in school. One change is that there are no longer marking periods, we have changed to trimesters. Your child will bring home 3 report cards this year rather than four. We have also add a citizenship grade which the students will be graded on participation, respect, following directions, responsibility. This grade will accompany the academic grade and be just as important. Students will be able to attend gatherings with a 1.7 or higher citizenship grade. The academic grades have been broken down into more specific learning targets so that you are able to see what your child might be excelling in or struggling with.

The discipline policy has changed as well. There are no more demerits. All level offenses (1, 2, 3) will be recorded on a discipline referral and input into the eschool system. This is for tracking and intervention purposes. The consequences will depend on the level offense that the students has broken. There was a discipline paper that was sent home for parents to review, please sign and return that as soon as possible!

Emergency cards need to be turned in immediately as well. They are VERY important to have on hand for the students. If there should be an emergency, they need to have all of the medical information as well as contact information for the parents or family members. Please return those cards this week.

If anyone has any questions or concerns please send me an email at nlewis@pca.k12.de.us or call 302-653-6276.

I hope everyone has a good day and a great weekend!

WOW! Can you believe that the end of the year is near? It definitely went by rather quickly! It is time to start preparing to end your year in 7th grade. This week we will be completing the benchmark testing in Math and Reading. Make sure you take your time and check over your work. They will be scored, placed in your file, and used as determining factors for school decisions.

In Writing, be sure that you are working on your cursive writing packets! You also have your extra credit to do which is 10 points a piece. You can do 2 of the options and get 10 points added to your Reading grade and your Writing grade. How cool is that?

In Social Studies, we are at the half way mark in Chapter 5! Be sure to pay careful attention during the review games.. they will help you lots!

In Science, we have started the Watersheds kit. Keep your journal up to date since it will help you with your test! If you missed any notes, please ask a classmate.

In Health and PE, we are learning about the reproductive systems of males and females.

I hope everyone is enjoying this great weather!

Please call or email with any questions or concerns. Thank you!

April 2008

Hello All!! We are into the 4th marking period now.. our last one! We have definitely had a good start to this marking period.

I want to say that I am proud of you all! The tests in Math were GREAT scores.. and the quiz in reading was also good!

In Writing, we are beginning to learn about personal narratives. We will soon be starting one!

In Reading, we are in a unit about fears. Tomorrow we will start reading "Trapped in Fear" in the Literature book. That will be followed by "Typhoid Mary". The last story will "Scaaary Jobs." This will end this unit. We are also reading "The Outsiders" as a class for a portion of every reading class. Everyone seems to be enjoying that.

In Math, we have completed one step equations and on to two step equations.

In Social Studies, we are going to be starting Chapter 5. The Stock Market Game is also still going strong. Keep selling and buying your stocks.. and checking your rankings.

In Science, we are on the kit that involves matter, mass, density, and volume.

In Health, we are finishing up the resolving conflicts.. and will be starting something new soon! Dont forget about your short stories that are due Tuesday, April 29.

In Physical Education, we are into our Fitness unit.

Dont forget to keep up on missing work. If students do not complete thier homework, they are required to write letters to their parents explaining the assignment and why they did not complete their work. You may request letters to be sent home at anytime, but I will be sending them all home with progress reports. Students were given a list of their missing work in Math today as well as reading and writing earlier in the week. They also know their current grades for those subjects.

I will be out of the building all of next week Monday, April 28-Friday, May 2. If you need anything, feel free to call the office, they will direct you to someone who can help you.

The GREAT graduation is on Saturday, May 3, 2008 at the Spring Fair. Make sure you are wrapping up your projects so they can be displayed at the Spring Fair. I hope everyone can make it!

The LEAP programs are also starting next week.. please get your forms and money turned in as soon as possible.

Progress Reports are scheduled to go home tomorrow! That means you only have about 4 weeks until the 3rd marking period ends. Make sure all of your make up work is turned in! YOU need to ask your teachers if you are missing work. Those who asked today in Math received a list of their missing work.

We had a Code Yellow drill today. I want to thank everyone for a great job. For the most part, you all remained silent and calm. It is very important to remain silent. In any situation where there may actually be an intruder, you want to make sure that they do not know anyone is in the room.

We have also started a new cycle for the next gathering. To attend the gathering, you must be demerit-free.. I know you ALL can do it! I would like to see EVERYONE at the next gathering!

Be sure to keep working on your G.R.E.A.T. projects.. this is a requirement due in May. You must have completed your project to participate in graduation!
